Whither "restraint of trade" ?

Filed under: Uncategorized — homerblogger @ 1:06 pm

South Africa’s move to bring Kent allrounder Ryan McLaren into the national side has failed after the county did not release him from his three-year contract. McLaren, who’s on a Kolpak deal until 2010, has withdrawn from the ODI squad to face Kenya and Bangladesh.

So, whatever happened to “he is just a player and he should be allowed to play wherever he chooses” and “it is grossly unfair for a cricketing body to prevent a player from plying his trade” and “sporting bodies cannot dictate what contracted players should do”, you know, the usual bile directed towards the BCCI whenever the ICL issue crops up.

  1. We all know how the cricket bodies reacted during the packer era, the same thing is happening now and will again happen in the future if anyone challenges their monopoly, period. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a la-la land.

  9. Considering Kent’s decision Ryan won’t be that enthusiastic playing in their cap next season.

A cruel selfish decision and I hope Kent suffer for their graceless attitude.

I read that England were hoping he would qualify for their team after his three years. I sincerely hopes he turns them down and is able to step out for South Africa in the near future.

  11. Nestaquin,

Thanks for your comments and welcome to the blog.

With the Kolpak restrictions falling into place from next year, it will be interesting to see the churn in the English domestic set up.

    Cheers,
